Narrowed blood vessels that reduce blood flow to the limbs, especially the legs.

    Understanding Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral artery disease is a narrowing of the arteries that carry blood to the limbs — most often the legs — caused by a build-up of fatty deposits. With less blood reaching the muscles, the legs can ache and wounds heal slowly.

At Crest Natural Health Centre, our natural approach focuses on improving circulation and tackling the underlying causes of the narrowing, with care tailored to the stage of the disease.

    Common Symptoms

Cramping leg or calf pain when walking that eases with rest (claudication)
Burning leg pain, often worse at night
Slow-healing sores or ulcers on the toes, feet, or legs
Coldness or colour changes in the lower leg or foot
    Erectile dysfunction in men

    Causes & Triggers

The main cause is atherosclerosis — fatty deposits building up inside the arteries and restricting blood flow.
Smoking and diabetes greatly increase the risk.
High blood pressure and high cholesterol accelerate the narrowing.
The risk rises with age, particularly over 60.

    Risks of Delaying Care

Severely reduced blood flow can cause wounds that won't heal and, in advanced cases, tissue death that may lead to amputation.
Pain and poor circulation can restrict mobility.
The same artery disease elsewhere in the body raises the risk of stroke.

    How We Diagnose It

Ankle-brachial index, comparing blood pressure at the ankle and the arm
    Lipid profile
    Complete blood count
    Inflammatory markers (ESR and CRP)
    Echocardiography
