Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) Treatment
Book Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) Consultation
A rare form of heart failure that occurs during pregnancy or shortly after delivery.
Understanding Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM)
Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a form of heart failure that appears in the final month of pregnancy or in the months after delivery, when the heart's chambers enlarge and the muscle weakens so it pumps less effectively.
It is most common in women over 30. At Crest Natural Health Centre, we provide gentle, supportive homeopathic care matched to each woman's symptoms, alongside the care of her maternity team.
Common Symptoms
Shortness of breath, especially when lying down or on exertion
Fatigue and tiring easily
Swelling of the feet and ankles
Heart palpitations
A dry cough
Needing to pass urine more often at night
Causes & Triggers
The exact cause is not fully understood, but the risk is higher in women over the age of 30.
High blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy add to the risk.
Being overweight and certain nutritional deficiencies are also thought to play a part.
Risks of Delaying Care
The weakened heart can develop dangerous, sometimes life-threatening, rhythm disturbances.
It can progress to congestive heart failure affecting one or both sides of the heart.
Blood clots may form in the heart chambers and travel to other organs.
How We Diagnose It
Echocardiogram to measure heart function
Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Chest X-ray
Blood tests for anaemia and electrolyte levels
